Mankweng Mall – Opening Date April 2020
Sitting at the prominent intersection of the University road (D617) and (R71) routes, the site enjoys excellent visibility and accessibility to the University of Limpopo, the Mankweng Hospital and the Magistrates court. With these regional nodes surrounding the site and with walking being the dominant mode of travel for the majority of the local community, convenience and distance play an essential role in the success of this retail development. With construction underway, Phase 1 will be anchored by a BP filling station which includes a Wild Bean Café. Phase 1 is scheduled to opening late 2018. Phase 2 introduces a Shopping Mall of 9000m² and the opening date is scheduled for April 2020. Although only a stone’s throw away from the established Paledi Mall, the proposed centre will focus on a much tighter catchment area. This is in response to the well-known shift in customer behaviour where time and convenience are being prioritized over the variety usually sought at larger malls. With dual-income households, longer work times and an increase in lifestyle demands, customers are showing a strong preference for avoiding unnecessary travel, long queues and cumbersome parking areas. Mankweng Mall, therefore, attempts not to compete, but rather fill the gap that exists in the current retail offering by catering to the customer who isn’t looking for the experiential element of shopping, but for access to daily essentials close to work, school and home.
