Pick n Pay throws it back to the 1970s with new shopping bag design – here’s why
Pick n Pay is launching two shopping bags in tribute to founder Raymond Ackerman, who celebrates his 90th birthday on Wednesday 10 March.
One of the 100% recycled bags features a historical collage-inspired ode to Ackerman and the other is a throwback to Pick n Pay’s classic 1970s aesthetic, featuring its original red, white, and blue striped branding.
In 1966, Ackerman was fired as the managing director of Checkers and, one year later, purchased four stores trading under the Pick n Pay brand in Cape Town.
Before stepping down as chairman of the Pick n Pay group in 2010, Ackerman had grown the business to include almost 800 stores across several countries in Southern Africa, employing 50,000 people.
Today, Pick n Pay has almost 2,000 corporate and franchise stores throughout Africa, employing more than 85,000 people and earning more than R80 billion in revenue according to the group’s latest financial results.
Some 18,000 of the limited edition bags will be available for purchase, for R30 each, at 320 stores nationwide. All proceeds from the sale of these shopping bags will be donated to Zama Dance School Trust, established over 30 years ago by Ackerman himself. The school was founded in the 1980s to provide ballet classes to children from disadvantaged communities.
The release of the classic 1970s and “photo memory” shopping bags come just one month after Pick n Pay launched a range or reusable shopping bags in support of the Save Our Beach Huts project. Images of the iconic, multicoloured Muizenberg and St James beach huts adorn the limited edition bags and are sold for R30 each.
Proceeds from the sale of the Save Our Beach Huts bags have been donated to the restoring and upkeep of these distinctive structures.
